The summer season is gathering momentum, and with rising temperatures, it is even more important to take measures to keep your horses cool, hydrated and safe on travel days.

The Overlander R240 2-Stall horsebox has many standard design features to help to keep your horse comfortable and combat the chance of your horse becoming dehydrated when travelling.

  • Ventilation – as standard, the R240 has 5 opening windows, skylight and dual intake and extraction ventilator, which is complemented by the Overlander R240’s airy design. There is a battery guard installed to allow the electrics to run off ignition while protecting the starter battery. This allows for 9 hours ventilation and lighting with no ignition power.

  • Camera Monitoring System – with safety at the forefront the R240 is fitted with our approved horse area camera monitoring system as standard.

  • Large Tack Area – giving ample storage for water containers, forage and buckets with easy access into horse area.

Dehydration can impact your horses health, behaviour and performance. Travelling can be stressful for horses, which can cause them to sweat, become restless and to dehydrate more quickly. To help avoid stress ensure that there is good ventilation, ample space in the vehicle and drive smoothly and carefully for a comfortable journey.

When faced with extreme temperatures, careful planning and attention to your horse’s well-being is crucial to make the journey as comfortable for your horse as possible.

PREPARATION

Plan your journey to avoid travelling during the warmest hours of the day where possible. Keep an eye on the weather forecast on the run up to travel days and make changes to your itinerary accordingly to avoid traveling in extreme heat and humidity.

Always ensure that your horse is rested, relaxed, cool and fully hydrated when they get on the lorry. Provide unrestricted access to clean water and their regular forage for at least 6 hours before departure and avoid strenuous exercise in the hours before travel.

If your horse is difficult to load or unload, practice this on the lead up to the journey to avoid stress on the day.

JOURNEY

Carry an adequate supply of clean drinking water for the horses and offer water regularly during rest stops (approx. every 2 hours in high temperatures) to keep them cool and hydrated. It is advisable to use familiar containers where possible and to bring water for home to encourage drinking in an unfamiliar environment.

Ensure good airflow and ventilation in the horsebox, particularly when stuck in traffic.

Be prepared for unexpected delays en route by carrying ample water, forage and containers on board the vehicle. Monitor traffic reports for any possible delays on your journey.

ON ARRIVAL

Park in shaded areas with air movement if possible. Utilising the electric ventilator system to keep the horsebox cool on hot days.

Offer water when you arrive and allow your horse to relax before competing or beginning exercise.

Remember, travelling horses in hot weather requires careful planning to avoid any stress and discomfort for your horse. In severe cases, dehydration can cause fatigue, loss of performance, reluctance to eat or drink, abnormal behaviour and even serious illness, so it is important to know your horse and to familiarise yourself with the signs of dehydration or discomfort so that you can act fast if any of these signs are noticed.

With the right knowledge, preparation and vehicle, there is nothing to stop you getting out and about this summer!
